The Ugly Underbelly of the Photogenic Freighter

I've been reading (not as much as I should) about the Northern Gateway pipeline/tanker proposal ... and — it will come as no surprise to regular WWF readers — thinking, Gah! No! What's our beautiful world coming to? Fuck off, Big Oil ... and variations on those themes. Sometime in the past few days, the words "sevenfold increase in tanker traffic in Burrard Inlet" popped out at me from one of those (too few) articles I've been reading, and this morning, as I surveyed the scattered ships in English Bay and imagined an armada of tankers filling up the blue in these images, that particular stat came back to me with a more visceral impact.

There's a heap of literature on the issue. Here's one thing, and here's another — both items taken from the website of our former MLA, George Heyman, whom we shall miss over here in Nofo.

Freddie recycles plastic bottles on the beach (after playing with them, of course).

This scene reminds me a little of The Beachcombers — CBC TV at its best!

Seven times more ... ?
