Philip Seymour Hoffman Meets His Shadow

On Groundhog Day yesterday, two legendary Phils — Punxsutawney's groundhog and Hollywood's actor — came up against their shadows, the latter in a tragically final encounter. In contrast to Pete Seeger's recent passing, from natural causes, at the venerable age of 94, there was nothing heartening to be found in the story of Philip Seymour Hoffman's fatal overdose at 46. Talented guy. I really dig his work (which The Globe and Mail covers more eloquently in this tribute article). I hope his kids and other family/friends will be OK.

Ironically, the traditional sign that there will be six more weeks of winter — ie. the groundhog seeing his shadow — happens on a sunny day. Today's photos play a bit with winter sun and shadows ... and people going about their (to me) secret lives ...

As far as we can discern, the sole purpose of human existence is to kindle a light in the darkness of mere being.

  1. PSH's death was such a sad, stupid thing. We can never be inside someone else's head, but I really wish he'd been stronger, or let more people inside his head, or something.
Completely unrelated comment - that's REALLY nice faux cedar floor work! I would love to do something similar but I am a very un-handy person.

    1. Don't attempt something like that cedar floor unless you're very experienced with power tools, hand tools, and working with difficult materials. I simply got well out of the way as Heather went to work.

    2. Yes ... I wish he'd had whatever he needed to avoid that horrible end. Sigh.

Re. the tiling .... you could do it, Leigh. I have very little talent in this area, but those babies just snap together. We got them at Home Depot.
